Demetrious Johnson Won’t Be Sad If The UFC Flyweight Division Is Eliminated

Former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson challenges One Flyweight Champion Adriano Moraes at One Championship Infinity 1 this April.

The men’s version of UFC Flyweight Division always seems like it’s on the way out, but Johnson won’t be sad if it is eventually eliminated.

“No, not at all,” he said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show (via Milan Ordonez of Bloody Elbow).

Johnson was just one of two fighters to hold the UFC Flyweight Title and the championship is vacant as of this writing.

Another thing Johnson believes is that One Championship won’t pick up all the fighters who could be out of a job if the UFC does eliminate the men’s flyweight division.

“Yeah (they could be potential opponents), or those guys could go up at 135,” he said. “It’s not like if they shut down the division, ONE’s just going to be like, ‘Come on guys, come over here.’ I don’t think that’s how it’s gonna be. I think ONE Championship’s very selective on the athletes that they bring over to the roster. They want to grab athletes that fit their brand the best. But I’m sure there’s a place out there for everybody to compete. You look at Sergio Pettis, he’s over at Bellator now. You have Rizin, you have PFL, there’s many places.”

One Championship Infinity 1 takes place on Friday, April 10 from the Istora Sanayan in Jakarta, Indonesia with Adriano Moraes and Demetrious Johnson headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which streams live on Bleacher Report Live.
