Daniel Cormier Claims That He Could Still Keep The Light Heavyweight Title With A Loss At UFC 230

Two division UFC champion Daniel Cormier is defending the UFC Heavyweight Title against Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 230.

DC is expected to be stripped of the light heavyweight gold by UFC 232, but the two division champion claims he can keep that title with a loss at UFC 230.

“Because if I lose to Derrick, then who is to say I don’t go, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go defend my light heavyweight title. Now you can’t take it,’” Cormier said at the UFC 230 media day. “Maybe that adds a whole other part to the equation. You can’t take both of my belts if I lost that one. Right? So do I really have that much to lose if I have a second one? Look at it like that.”

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson are headlining UFC 232 and the light heavyweight title is expected to be the prize for both fighters.

Cormier says that he is still the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and still may be, depending on how UFC 230 goes.

“I am the light heavyweight champion until those guys fight,” Cormier said. “So if the light heavyweight champion loses his heavyweight title and goes, ‘Wait I’m willing to defend my belt,’ now we have some conversations to have.”

UFC 230 takes place on Saturday, November 3 from Madison Square Garden in New York, New York with Daniel Cormier and Derrick Lewis headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
