WWE Controlled Twitter Shares Breitbart Article
WWE Public Relations tweeted a live event review from Breitbart News.
On Monday, the Twitter account for WWE's public relations department shared the following tweet with an article attached.
Family friendly entertainment https://t.co/gWFDdPwlrX
— WWE Public Relations (@WWEPR) February 12, 2018
The article is an editorial about a father rediscovering WWE while introducing his family to professional wrestling. The writer said he and his kids started watching casually but it led to a WWE Live Event with his daughter and son. The article was a story of one family's journey into being a WWE fan. But, Breitbart News has been known for very different content.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Breitbart became more prominent as they published right-wing slanted news articles often with anti-immigrant, anti-Islam, and anti-government rhetoric. The website has also published conspiracy theories about President Obama's birthplace, Hillary Clinton being a murderer, and Muslim immigrants destroying Europe. Breitbart became the most widely known when former executive Steve Bannon became part of President Trump's campaign.
The positive nature of the article likely prompted WWE to tweet it. The author frames the experience as WWE being "family friendly". In a move to reflect those values, WWE recently stated they are "committed" to their decision to fire Hulk Hogan and not bring him back.
Fightful reached out to WWE, who didn't respond to our request for comment.
