WWE Backlash Recap: Several New Champions, AJ Styles Wins WWE Title

Welcome to the Fightful.com viewing party for WWE Backlash! Tonight history will be made as Smackdown! Live will have their first pay per view since the brand split! Tonight will see WWE Heavyweight champion Dean Ambrose defend his title against The Phenomenal Face That Runs The Place; AJ Styles! The Viper; Randy Orton will take on The Eater of Worlds; Bray Wyatt. The Smackdown! Live Tag Team champions and the first ever Smackdown Live Women’s champion will be crowned!

Baron Corbin vs Apollo Crews

They start off with a test of strength, Crews showing off his speed, but Corbin is just too strong. Crews hits a dropkick that drops Corbin then goes for a springboard from the apron, but Corbin hits him with a right hand. Crews is back in the ring, but Corbin drops him yet again. Crews hits a series of kicks then a leaping lariat that drops Corbin. Crews hits a splash in the corner, but Corbin whips in back into the other one. Corbin is sent outside, but gets right back in the ring, dropping Crews from behind. Corbin keeps Crews grounded then Corbin turns Crews inside out with a brutal lariat for a close 2 count. Crews hits a enzugiri into a standing mooonsault for a close 2 count then Corbin hits an STO out of no where for a close 2 count of his own. Crews hits an olympic slam for a close 2 count. Corbin hits Ends of Days out of no where for the pin and the win. Good match by these two.

Winner: Baron Corbin via pinfall with The End of Days

-We open with a video package regarding the 15 year anniversay of 9/11 then a video package about Shane talking about the focus and vision of Smackdown! Live and their debut PPV.

-We open the show with Smackdown! Live commissioner and general manager Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan; respectively coming out to kick off the historic event. Shane welcomes us to Backlash and says that on behalf of everyone involved with Smackdown! Live they want to thank the fans worldwide for all of the success that Smackdown! Live has had. Shane talks about certain Superstars getting a chance to shine because of the fans. Daniel talks about the two title defenses tonight, the World Championship and the Intercontinental Championship. Shane talks about how they’ll be crowning the new Tag Team champions and the Divas champion.

Women’s Six Pack Challenge for the Women’s Smackdown! Live Championship

Alexa goes for a roll up on Nikki instantly then Naomi sends Nikki and Natalya out of the ring as Naomi and Becky Lynch face off in the center of the ring. Becky starts focusin on Naomi’s arm then Naomi drops Becky with a series of kicks. Becky sends Naomi to the outside then Becky goes up to dive out after her, but Carmella stops her then hits a frankensteiner for a quick 2 count. Nikki and Carmella square off, but Natalya and Alexa attack them. Alexa hits Insult to Injury, but only get a 2 count on Nikki who hits a kick off the second rope. Alexa hits a sunset flip powerbomb, but only gets 2 then Natalya comes in and hits a basement dropkick on Alexa. Becky comes in and drops Alexa with a dropkick then hits the flying firearm. Natalya hits her with a release german and sends her out of the ring. Naomi hits a full nelson bomb then applies a bridge submission. Nikki spears Carmella then Carmella hits a reverse STO. Nikki hits an Alabama slam for a close 2 count then sets Carmella on the top rope. Natalya comes in and hits a powerbomb superplex on both of them. Alexa gets a quick 2 count on Natalya then rolls her out of the ring, repeating with Nikki then goes to Carmella and gets two quick 2 counts before sending her out. Alexa kicks Becky who goes for the disarmer then Alexa hits a sunset flip powerbomb for a close 2 count. Carmella pushes Alexa out of the ring then Nikki tosses her out. Nikki starts to dive out of the ring, but Carmella comes in out of no where and drops her, sending her out of the ring then Naomi does the same. Naomi jumps off the top rope and takes everyone else out. Alexa tosses Naomi out of the ring then beats on Natalya in the corner, only to have Naomi hit a reverse superplex powerbomb to eliminate Alexa. Naomi dives off the top rope, only to have Nikki hit her with a forearm. Natalya applies a sharpshooter for the tap, eliminating Naomi. Carmella throws Becky into the stairs on the outside then comes in and works with Natalya against Nikki, but Natalya has other plans, dropping her with a lariat then Nikki hits an argentine backbreaker for the pin on Natalya. Carmella rolls her up and eliminates her, shocking the crowd. Nikki slaps her before she leaves then Carmella slaps and stomps on Becky. Becky hits a triple t-bone suplex then runs at Carmella only to get kicked in the mid-secton and dropped. Becky applies the Disarmer out of no where and gets the tap and the win. Great match by these women, wished Alexa could have been in longer, but it was over quickly by then. Good win for Becky, it’s about time she becomes champion.

Winner: Becky Lynch via submission with the Disarmer

-Becky is interviewed after the match as the crowd chants “You Deserve It!” as Becky thanks the fans. 

-We get Miz backstage knocking on the door of some kid from Nickelodeon. They have a back and forth before he shuts the door. All of a sudden we have Bray slamming a door into Randy’s ankle repeatedly then walks away.

The Usos vs The Hype Bros

Mojo and Jey start the match, Mojo dominating him before tagging in Zack. Jimmy tags himself in and Zack hits a facebuster then hits a douple baseball slide kick that takes out both Usos on the outside. Zack hits a missile dropkick off the apron then Mojo hits a double shoulder tackle that takes them out next, that was crazy. Zack and Jimmy are back in before Jey tags himself in, sending Zack outside. Jey hits a clothesline on Zack on the outside then slaps him, getting back in at the count of 6 for a quick 2 count. Jimmy hits a snap suplex on Zack for a quick 2 count then keeps him grounded with a side headlock. Jimmy hits a spinning roundhouse kick then plays to the crowd, tagging Jey back in. Jey hits a running hip attack then drops Zack with clubbing blows then a headbutt to keep him from Mojo for a quick 2 count. Zack hits a hangman’s neckbreaker, but Jey tags in Jimmy, the two double teaming Zack in their corner. Zack finally tags in Mojo who sends Jimmy out of the ring then hits a military press slam on Jey. They go for the Hype Machine, but Jimmy grabs Mojo and pulls him out of the ring. Zack hits a frankensteiner off the top rope for a close 2 count. Mojo runs at Jimmy, but is sidestepped. Jey hits a chop block on Zack then tags in Jimmy. The Usos hit the same move they did to Chad Gable and get the tap and the win. Great showing by the rejuvenated Usos.

Winner: The Usos via submission

-Renee Young interviews Heath Slater and Rhyno backstage about their match tonight. Heath says nothing can stop Rhyno then leaves as Rhyno starts to talk then comes back and interrupts him, so Rhyno can only make facial expressions, which he does well honestly.

-We get a video package for the Talking Smack segment between The Miz and Daniel Bryan then how The Miz and Dolph Ziggler feud. 

The Miz vs Dolph Ziggler

-Before the match The Miz has a confrontation with Daniel Bryan backstage then comes out to the ring.

They square off Miz rushes at Dolph, getting a spinebuster for his troubles then Dolph transitions to the back to get a rear naked choke, Miz quickly getting to the ropes and getting out of the ring. Dolph takes Miz down with a single leg then a series of grappling has Dolph getting a few quick 1 counts then gets the back again, but Miz gets to the ropes. Miz stands up and drops Dolph with a series of right hands then hits a suplex. Dolph drops Miz with a few dropkicks then Miz hammers him on the apron. Miz chokes Dolph in the ropes then runs into him from behind for a quick 2 count. Miz applies a bow and arrow, but can’t get the tap. Dolph goes for a Zig Zag, but Miz counters and sends him out of the ring. Miz tosses him back in the ring and gets a quick 2 count. Dolph goes for a splash, but misses then Miz gets a quick 2 count then applies the Romero Special, but can’t get the tap. Miz dropkicks Dolph repeatedly in the corner then runs at him with a clothesline, dropping him. Miz hits a move off the top rope then Dolph rolls him up for a close 2 count. Dolph hits a series of elbow drops for a close 2 count. Miz hits a powerbomb on the rope for a quick 2 count. Dolph hits the Famouser for a quick 2 count. Dolph gets a rear naked choke, but can’t get the tap. Dolph goes for a superkick then Miz locks in the figure four for the tap. Dolph hits a superkick for a close 2 count, but Miz gets his foot on the ropes then rolls out of the ring. Dolph carries him back in the ring then Maryse sprays hairspray in Dolphs face and Miz hits The Skull Crushing Finale for the pin and the win.

Winner: Miz via pinfall with The Skull Crushing FInale

Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt

Winner: No Contest Randy Orton isn’t fit to compete

Bray Wyatt vs Kane

Kane and Bray start it off in the ring then get out of the ring, Bray grabbing a chair, but they quickly get back in the ring. Kane hits a big boot then Bray goes back outside, Kane following him. Bray hits Kane with a chair then splashes him in the corner, following it up with more chair shots. Bray repeatedly assaults Kane with a chair then gets a close 2 count. Bray then stomps him and goes for a uranagi on the chair, but Kane counters and hits a DDT on the chair. Bray sets Kane up on the table then runs over the other two then hits a running senton through Kane on the third one. This is a really cool match, I really like this side of Bray. Bray rolls Kane back into the ring then goes for Sister Abigail only to be chokeslammed, but Bray manages to kick out at 2. Bray hits a uranagi on Kane out of no where on the chair for a close 2 count of his own. Randy limps out to the ring and Kane sits up just as Randy slides in and hits an RKO on Bray. Kane hits a chokeslam on Bray for the pin and the win.

Winner: Kane via pinfall with a chokeslam

-AJ is backstage and talks to two jobbers. 

-We get a video package of the end of the Usos versus Hype Bros match as they come out for their next match.

The Usos vs Heath Slater & Rhyno

Jimmy and Heath start it off with Heath hitting a series of right hands then dropping him with a clothesline. Jey gets tagged in then Heath tags in Rhyno who drops Jey, quickly tagging Heath back in. Jey pushes Heath into the corner, but he hits Jimmy then The Usos hit a suplex onto the ring post then a superkick, quickly putting Heath back in the ring for a close 2 count. Jimmy tags Jey back in, playing to the crowd as Jey tells them to be quiet before hitting a sliding clothesline into a rear chin lock. Heath gets free then Jey hits him with a headbutt, tossing him into the corner, but Slater counters him. Heath goes to tag in Rhyno, but Jey tags in Jimmy who whips Heath into the corner twice, following up with a backbreaker elbow drop. Heath almost tags in Rhyno, but Jey kicks Rhyno’s hand away before whipping Heath into the corner yet again. Jey hits a belly to back suplex for a close 2 count. Jey puts a half nelson chin lock on Heath. Heath nearly tags Rhyno, but Jey yanks him back to the mat by the hair. Jey shoulder tackles Heath into the corner, JImmy tagging himself in and hitting a splash before tagging Jey back in. Heath finally mounts a comeback then tags in Rhyno who takes out both Usos. Rhyno hits a belly to belly suplex then goes for the Gore, but Jimmy sends him into the turnbuckle. Heath tags himself back in then hits stereo neckbreakers on The Usos. Heath hits a leaping DDT for a close 2 count, Jey yanking Heath out of the ring. Jimmy hits a superkick then Rhyno gores him out of no where. Heath gets the pin and the win.

Winner: Heath Slater & Rhyno via pinfall

-Heath and Rhyno are interviewed after the match, Heath saying that he proved it was a mistake for him not getting drafted, but he thanks Shane and Daniel for his chance and he made good on it. 

-We get a very nice video package for AJ beating Cena then how he got his title shot against Dean. 

Dean Ambrose vs AJ Styles WWE Championship Match

They start off with some grappling then AJ goes for a quick roll up then a small package, declaring he can do it all day long. AJ takes Dean down then they have a clean break when he gets back up. Dean hits a series of right hands then arm drag takeovers before AJ rolls out of the ring. Dean chases AJ around the outside then AJ stops him as soon as he gets back in the ring. Ambrose gets a sunset flip for a quick 2 count then AJ hits him with a forearm. AJ whips Dean into the ropes, but Dean counters with a series of punches and chops then hits a back body drop, AJ rolling out before Dean goes to dive out, AJ slides in and hits a drop toe hold that sends Dean throat first into the ropes. AJ hits a neckbreaker then goes to choke Dean in the ropes. AJ drops Dean on the top rope, Dean trying to get away, but AJ elbows the back of his neck and then applies a rear chin lock. AJ hits a beautiful dropkick that drops Dean then kicks him in the back for a quick 2 count. AJ drops Dean then hits a flying knee on the nose of Dean for a quick 2 count. AJ follows up with a series of knees to the side of the face of Dean then hits him with a series of forearms in the corner. Dean tosses AJ in the corner then stomps a mud hole in AJ that would make Steve Austin proud. Dean goes for a shoulder tackle into the corner, but AJ gets out of the way and Dean hits the ring post. Dean hits a series of headbutts, but AJ counters with strong style foearms. AJ goes for a splash, but Dean gets out of the way and sets AJ on the top rope, going for a spider german suplex, but AJ counters, turning it into an avalanche exploder. Dean goes for Dirty Deeds, but AJ counters, Dean dropping AJ with a clothesline however. AJ dives off the top rope, but Dean catches him for a tilt a whirl backbreaker for a close 2 count. Dean goes up top, but AJ gets out of the ring. Dean decides to hit him anyway, diving off the top rope and hitting AJ with an elbow. Dean tosses AJ back into the ring. Dean hits a Dodon for a quick 2 count then AJ goes for the Calf Crusher, only for Dean to counter, but AJ hits a turnbuckle suplex on Dean. AJ goes for the Phenomenal Forearm, but Dean gets out of the way, then Dean goes for Dirty Deeds, but AJ counters. AJ tosses Dean into the corner then hits a diving knee drop that severely injures the left leg of Dean Ambrose. AJ focuses on the leg with a stretch, but Dean slams his boot into AJ’s face repeatedly. Dean goes for a suplex, but AJ counters it with a Calf Crusher. Dean crawls to the ropes, bu the damage has been done as AJ gets Dean back into the center of the ring and applies it again. Dean wraps his arm around the neck of AJ and slams his head into the mat repeatedly. AJ kicks Dean’s leg then goes for The Styles Clash, but Dean grabs the ropes, going over the top rope, but AJ follows up with a step up enzugiri. AJ starts to go for The Styles Clash again, but Dean counters and catapults him right into the ring post, sending AJ to the floor. AJ gets back up then Dean hits him with a lariat, getting him back in the ring and following it up with a lariat then a bulldog into a cradle pin for a very close 2 count. AJ hits a series of punches and kicks then hits an Ushigaroshi for a close 2 count. AJ goes for The Styles Clash again, but Dean drops him. Dean goes for bulldog, but AJ counters into an Argentine sitout powerbomb for a close 2 count. AJ picks up and slams Dean then hits a springboard 450 splash for another very close 2 count. Dean hits a swinging neckbreaker as they both get to their feet and Dean hits a series of punches, chops, knees then dropkicks AJ out of the ring; that looked so painful. Dean dives through the ropes and sends AJ over the announce table and onto the floor. Dean goes after him then tosses him back over it and over the barricade and into the crowd. Dean runs over the announce tables then hits AJ with a double ax handle into the crowd. Dean tosses AJ back into the ring then AJ hits a pele kick, Dean countering with the lunatic clothesline. AJ knocks Dean into the referee then hits a low blow into The Styles Clash for the pin and the win. AJ has done it, he’s not gotten every belt there is, until he gets drafted to RAW next year. Amazing match by these two.
