World Gravy Wrestling Championships Returns, Competitors Get Dressed Up And Mashed For Charity

Everything is better with gravy.

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, the World Gravy Wrestling Championships returned on August 29 at the Rose ‘N’ Bowl Pub in Rossendale, Lancashire.

The event features competitors dressing up and wrestling in a pool of gravy for two minutes. The winner is determined by a points system and points are scored for fancy dress, entertainment value and wrestling ability.

The charity event raises funds for East Lancashire Hospice.

“Basically, people come in fancy dress – men and ladies – and then they wrestle in gravy and get eliminated as the day goes on,” Pub restaurant manager Carol Lowe said. “It’s very messy.”

The men’s event was won by Lloyd Clarkson. Imogen Young won the women’s title.

WWE famously did a gravy bowl match in 2001 when Trish Stratus defended the Women’s World Championship against Stacy Keibler.
