Willie Mack Discusses Leaving NWA, Compares Lucha Underground And IMPACT | Exclusive
Willie Mack made moves, even if they surprised some.
The highly touted Mack went from Lucha Underground to NWA to IMPACT Wrestling in short order in recent years, making a mark in all three. When speaking to Fightful for an exclusive interview, Mack discussed why he made the move.
“It was more of a people trying to tell me what to do and how to do things. I said ‘you know what? I’m going to do what’s best for me.’ So here I am. I’m here for a couple of years, and it’s been fun. We’ve got a great roster, the staff is cool — which is rare to find in wrestling. Everybody gets along and there’s no egos,” said Willie, in a Lexington, Kentucky gym.
Mack told us that Sonjay Dutt (now with WWE), originally reached out to him to bring him in for a Lucha Underground vs. IMPACT show during WrestleMania week in New Orleans in 2018, and then later he was brought in to team with Rich Swann at Bound For Glory 2019.
Mack looked back upon his time in Lucha Underground fondly, but said there were some major differences compared to what he’s doing now.
“It’s pretty much the same setup and all, just one was a movie company and the other is straight up pro wrestling. You’re used to going out there. You have this to do, this to do. In Lucha Underground, you’d have days to set something up. One day you’ll fly out and shoot the vignettes, then you’ll have backstage stuff. Then you get to the wrestling part, and you’re figuring out how the product is going to come together on TV. You look at it like ‘man, that’s kind of cool!”
The success of Lucha Underground alumni didn’t surprise Mack, who has been among plenty during his time in IMPACT.
You can see Willie Mack every Tuesday on IMPACT Wrestling, on AXS TV.
