The Undertaker Talks Evolution Of His Theme Songs, Working With Jim Johnston

The Undertaker’s “dong” is arguably the most iconic opening to any theme song in WWE history.

Over his 30-year career in WWE, Undertaker’s entrance theme has evolved, starting as funeral piano music and going the complete opposite end of the spectrum, using rap-rock hits from Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock during his time as the American Badass.

Appearing on Hot Ones, Undertaker discussed the evolution of his entrance songs and working with Jim Johnston.

“He [Jim Johnston] had a long run with us and was so creative. What was so good about him is, after he would put something together, he would want your input on it. There was a time where there was a nasty guitar riff, as the character worked and evolved, the ‘dong’ at the beginning is so iconic and everything has to start with that. Then, you can tweak and add things to it as you go along. Jim was really good. I enjoyed working with him and evolving the entrance through the years,” said Undertaker.

When asked which song, outside of the original, got the biggest pop from fans, Undertaker said, “When I came out in Seattle to Limp Bizkit, they played me in live. That was pretty charged up. I’d have to go with Kid Rock’s ‘American Badass.’ It was so much energy with that song and me calling myself The American Badass, it just fit perfectly. The lyrics, everything was just spot on.”

The Undertaker’s final “dong” will hit this Sunday at WWE Survivor Series when he bids farewell to WWE, officially wrapping up his 30-year career.
