The Undertaker: At This Point In My Career, I Have No Desire To Get Back In The Ring
The Undertaker is at peace with his career.
The story of The Last Ride has been The Undertaker searching for the perfect final match to cap off his historic career. It’s been an up-and-down few years for Undertaker as he’s had memorable matches and stinkers, but nothing that has made him believe he could walk away.
That seemed to change at WrestleMania 36 when he closed night one with the Boneyard match against AJ Styles. The bout was well-received by fans and critics alike and the final scene of Undertaker riding away on his motorcycle after burying AJ Styles looked to be the perfect final paragraph for his story
In the final episode of The Last Ride, Undertaker more or less announced his retirement, saying he is at peace with his career.
“I believe I’m at a place now, post-Boneyard, which was a hellacious battle against one of the best in the business. Here you are, climbing on your motorcycle and taking off. There was a lot of thought and a lot of emotion, one of those being ‘are you happy enough with that?’ It was a powerful moment. You don’t necessarily always get those. If there was ever a perfect ending to a career, that right there was it. If Vince was in a pinch, would I come back? I guess time would only tell there. In case of emergency, break glass, you pull out The Undertaker. I would consider it. At this point in my career, I have no desire to get back in the ring,” he said.
Undertaker did give the infamous “never say never” line but continued by saying, “I’m at a point, it’s time this cowboy really rides away. There’s nothing left for me to conquer or accomplish. The game has changed. It’s time for new guys to come up. The time just seems right. This documentary has helped me discover that and opened my eyes to the bigger picture and not judge myself as harshly these last few years.”
He continued, reflecting on the documentary and what his peers have had to say in the previous episodes.
“My peers, given their insight, I got a genuine sense they care for me and want the best for me. It’s been very humble to allow this part to come out and have them accept it. They’ve accepted Mark Calaway. I can do more good outside the ring than I can inside. I’m finally at a place where I can accept that.”
It remains to be seen if Vince McMahon will “break glass” and call on The Undertaker, but for now, it looks like WrestleMania 36 will mark the final match of Undertaker’s career.
