Triple H: Wembley Was Not A Business Success, That’s Why WWE Has Not Come Back
SummerSlam 1992 was thought to be a huge success for WWE. The show drew an announced attendance of 80,355 fans at Wembley Stadium on August 29, 1992. The show remains the fourth most attended WWE show in history and the most attended non-WrestleMania event.
Despite the attendance success in 1992, WWE has not returned to Wembley Stadium since that night. According to Triple H, it’s because the show was not a success from a business perspective.
“I always hear about Wembley, I always hear it was such a massive success. It was not,” said Triple H to Express Sport. “I will just say that from a business standpoint, it was not. That’s why we didn’t come back and that’s why we’re still trying to figure it out.”
Triple H continued, noting that the time zone also plays a role in WWE not returning to the United Kingdom for a major pay-per-view event. “The time zones are the big kicker. We have to go where the most people can watch.”
The WWE COO stated that the company continues to experiment with locations and will return when the time is right.
WWE recently held the pay-per-view event Super Show-Down in Australia. The event aired live in the United States at 5 a.m. ET. They’ve also traveled to Saudi Arabia earlier this year, and will be returning in November, for a show that aired at 12 p.m. ET in the US. With events now airing on the WWE Network, they became available on-demand following their conclusion.
A pay-per-view event in the UK might not be in WWE’s plans in the immediate future, but NXT UK is set to premiere this Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET on the WWE Network.
