Tony Khan Turned Down Third Hour Of AEW Dynamite, Got ‘Fair Financial Considerations’ For TBS Move
AEW is headed to TBS in January 2022 with Dynamite moving to the Superstation in the new year. Along with Dynamite switching networks, AEW will debut its new show Rampage on August 13 with the show starting on TNT then switching to TBS in 2022.
Appearing on Busted Open Radio, AEW President Tony Khan stated he renegotiated the contract with TBS and TNT and received “very, very fair financial considerations” in the deal.
Mike Johnson at PWInsider reports AEW is “receiving in the area of an eight-figure payday” from WarnerMedia. After the NHL deal with Turner was signed in April, AEW President Tony Khan stated that it would have to be a good deal for AEW if they were to move.
Speaking on Rampage, Khan commented, “[Turner] asked at one point if I wanted to do three hours of Dynamite when a third hour came up and I said I believe in doing it on another night. This timeslot is good for the fans to keep a great night of wrestling fresh on Friday nights. I promise, Rampage will not be a secondary show, it will be equivalent of Dynamite.”
While AEW Dynamite and Rampage will be moving to TBS, TNT will host four quarterly events on the network.
Speaking on those events, Khan said, “I’m really excited about adding another property, which wasn’t part of the deal at all, until the NHL came up and the possibility of us going to TBS, which is adding the quarterly supercard specials. I wanted to have that presence on TNT still and adding a new franchise. I believe we can make those special events.”
Khan compared the events to Clash of the Champions or Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Brett Weitz, general manager of TBS, TNT and truTV, confirmed that the NHL deal with Turner did play a factor in AEW switching networks. You can find his full comments by clicking here.
