Tony Khan Talks AEW TV Deal, Says He Will Not Play On-Screen Character
Don’t count on Tony Khan being the “Mr. McMahon” of All Elite Wrestling.
The authority character has been a staple in pro wrestling for decades, with the role sometimes being portrayed by real-life bosses. While that head honcho spot may be something utilized in the upcoming All Elite Wrestling promotion, don’t expect Tony Khan to be the one cutting promos.
“I have thought about it and I’m not going to do it. We have some of the greatest on-air performers in the world and look, I am who I am in the promotion. I am the president and the CEO and the founder of this company but it’s not going to be me all over TV and I’m not going to be doing a lot of interviews or backstage segments on television,” Khan told WSVN-TV’s Chris Van Vliet in a new interview.
There’s been much discussion about where AEW will land on television, or even if television will be the route taken. Khan was short on the details, but said that he wants to improve upon the romanticized era of competition from two decades ago that so many fawn over today.
“I have negotiated some things and I am very excited about what we are doing. I do think it’s very important to give wrestling fans a better quality of life. I think 20 years ago was honestly in many ways not nearly as good of a time to be a wrestling fan. There was not nearly as much wrestling out there and available if you were really looking for it. If you are really looking for great wrestling now there has never been a better time to be a wrestling fan,” Khan said.
