TJP Does Not Understand Why Wrestlers Stake Claim To Moves

TJP gives his take about wrestlers “owning” moves.

The landscape of professional wrestling in 2019 features an abundance of in-ring performers who are trying to separate themselves from the pack whether that’d be high flyers like Will Ospreay or technical wrestlers such as Zack Sabre Jr. and Jonathan Gresham. Some wrestlers have unique characters that they use to elevate them above the rest and some acts and wrestling styles are similar to each other.

Former WWE Cruiserweight Champion TJP spoke about this topic when he joined the ‘Wrassle Rap’ podcast and mentioned how wrestlers try to stake claim to certain moves and explained that he does not get why that happens because the sport of pro wrestling owes no one anything.

“I don’t care if anybody else is like me. Just don’t tell me not to be like me. I’m confident in myself that I can use the same tools as the guy next to me and still create something that’s completely different and unique. So I tell people all the time, do my moves, tell my story, wear my tights if you want. Come out to my music. I don’t care because it’s not gonna be less special when I do it.” He explained. “I saw Mia Yim at SmackDown recently. They had a lot of the NXT people there and Mia has an incredible menu of things that she does. She’s very talented, and a lot of the stuff she does is stuff that I do but I told her, ‘You do it so well’ and she’s like, ‘I thought that you’d be upset’ and a lot of people get upset if you borrow their stuff or whatever. I said, ‘No, do it. Do it more.’ None of us own any of this. Wrestling doesn’t belong to us and that’s what I think is insane. People are so possessive of stuff. Like, ‘That’s my move, that’s my thing. I say that, I dress like this. I do that’. I’ve never had that conversation with somebody.”

The most recent example of this topic came when Lana Austin came across a clip of NXT star Kacy Catanzaro executing a “Tilt-a-Whirl Stunner” maneuver and for more on that story, click here.
