Sumie Sakai On Retirement: “I Will Quit When I Decide To Quit!”

Although Sumie Sakai has entertained the thought of retiring, she’s still not hanging up her boots.

In an interview with Steel Chair Magazine, Sakai has mentioned how she has considered retiring in the past but then described an interaction she had with Jushin Thunder Liger in Las Vegas after she had a match with Tenille Dashwood. Sakai now said her retirement will come when she declares it.

“About two years ago, it became known in the business that I was considering retirement. I wrestled a match with Tenille in Las Vegas,” Sakai said. “I didn’t know it at the time, but Jushin Liger, who I have always admired and have had the utmost respect for as a wrestler and a person, watched my match. He took me aside afterward and said that I should reconsider retiring because I can still help so many people and that I can still ‘go.’ I will quit when I DECIDE to quit!”

Sakai, the inaugural Women Of Honor Champion, had a brief statement when asked what to expect from the women of Ring Of Honor in the future.

“I want to encourage the great, young talent in our women’s division to share their unique experiences and talent, so we can all grow and get better,” Sakai said.

Ring Of Honor has not been running events for months due to the coronavirus pandemic and there’s no word on when events will resume. The full interview can be seen at this link.
