Steve Austin Says Emojis Were The Genesis Of Chris Jericho’s Appearance On Broken Skull Sessions
Steve Austin promises that Chris Jericho goes into everything during his upcoming Broken Skull Sessions appearance on WrestleMania Sunday.
It was recently announced that Chris Jericho will be the next guest on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions on Peacock and WWE Network. While Paul Wight, formerly known as Big Show, was a guest on the series recently, that interview took place while Paul was still under WWE contract. This interview will be historic in that it is the first time a contracted AEW wrestler will appear on WWE Network programming.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Stone Cold Steve Austin revealed what it was like to get Vince McMahon’s approval to shoot the interview and how the interview came to be in the first place.
“I was having a beer one night after my Broken Skull Sessions interview with The Undertaker aired, and out of the blue, Chris Jericho reached out and said, ‘Man, that was a great interview,’” Austin says. “I sent him back a couple of those emojis, one of a beer mug and the other of an eagle, and then he called me right then and there.
“We got to talking. I’ve always respected the hell out of his career, and I’m glad they’re around—it gives the guys and girls in professional wrestling more places to work. I said, ‘I’d love to have you on the show.’ He said he’d love to do it, so I checked with Vince about it.”
Austin noted that he was sure to double-check with the boss, who isn’t always the best with modern forms of communication.
“I texted Vince and said we had this badass idea about Jericho coming on the show,” Austin says. “Vince goes, ‘It’s cool. Go ahead.’ But me and Vince don’t always do well with phones and texts and all that, so I texted one more time, ‘Are you sure it’s OK to have Chris Jericho on the show?’ Vince gave me the thumbs up, and Chris came out to do the show.”
Steve Austin has never been shy about supporting All Elite Wrestling, even becoming one of the first personalities to interview Tony Khan following the start of the promotion. Austin notes he is glad the promotion is around and given talent more places to work and that he and Chris Jericho will get into “everything” in their upcoming interview.
“We go into everything,” Austin says. “Jericho is one of the all-time greats, and it’s going to be cool to have someone from AEW on a WWE show. To bottom line it, I’m excited for people to watch this show.”
