Sonya Deville Hoping To See LGBT+ Storylines On WWE Programming Done In The Right Way

It’s no secret that Sonya Deville has been a huge advocate for LGBT+ rights and is hopeful that WWE programming can potentially include LGBT+ storylines down the road.

In an interview with Allure, Deville said she has been talking with GLAAD and WWE in recent years, helping forge a relationship between the two entities. Deville also added that she believes WWE should have LGBT storylines for inclusion, but notes that it has to be done in the right way.

“I’ve been talking with GLAAD and WWE over the past two years and really have developed a great relationship between the three of us. I am a firm supporter and believer that it’s important to have that inclusion in our programming in the right, most appropriate, tasteful way. I realized — and I think I learned this at a young age — that anything that’s worth anything, you’re going to take a risk to get there and it’s not going to be easy. If you’re getting hate along the way I think that means that you’re doing something right and that you’re creating change,” Deville said.

Although should such a storyline would be controversial, Deville knows that she might have to be at the center of it and is fine with that. Deville said she is more than willing to be “like the guinea pig” for this in an effort to bring about change.

“By doing this, yeah, I would be putting myself out there and I would be almost like the guinea pig for this kind of revolution. But I am willing to do something like that to make a social change and to really pioneer this movement in the right direction,” Deville said. “Somebody has to do it, right?”

The topic of LGBT storylines in WWE being brought up is nothing new as Stephanie McMahon said WWE would try to do so in an interview with NBC News back in 2016.
