Sonny Onoo Says AEW Wanted Ultimo Dragon To Appear On A “Computer Convention Type Of Show”
Tony Khan tried to book Ultimo Dragon for an AEW show.
Appearing as a guest on The Perched On The Top Rope Podcast, Sonny Onoo shared that AEW reached out to him about having Ultimo Dragon appear on a “computer convention type of show,” which presumably was Fyter Fest on June 29, 2019. Unfortunately for the two sides, a scheduling conflict prevented it from happening.
“Before the AEW started on TNT [I got a call directly from Tony Khan] and he wanted to have Ultimo Dragon on one of their promotional shows in Florida,” Onoo said. “It was a computer convention type of show. He wanted to know what the details were. What I can tell you is that it was a one time shot and [Ultimo Dragon] was getting ready to go back to Japan for Dragon Gate, which is a company he started originally in Japan, but he’d been away from it or stepped away from it for many years and that opportunity came at the same time. So it was more of a conflict of scheduling.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Onoo talked revealed that Tony Khan contacted him about managing Ultimo Dragon in AEW. You can find those comments here.
Sonny Onoo famously helped bridge the partnership between NJPW and WCW in the mid-90s. He would occupy an on-screen managerial role for WCW, most notably managing Ultimo Dragon during his time with the company.
Ultimo Dragon has wrestled all over the world, including CMLL, AAA, NJPW, WCW, and WWE. During his time with WCW, he was a two-time Cruiserweight and World Television Champion.
