At WWE Payback, Rollins defeated Nakamura to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Nakamura then attacked Rollins after the bell. On the September 4 episode of WWE Raw, Rollins challenged Nakamura to a rematch, but Shinsuke turned him down.

Rollins called Nakamura out again on the September 11 episode of WWE Raw. The WWE World Heavyweight Champion made it clear that he wanted to fight then and there. Nakamura appeared on the video screen, and he was attacking Ricochet. He stated that he found out that Rollins was not cleared to compete.

Nakamura made it clear that he was still determined to take the gold from Rollins, but Monday was night the right time.

On the August 21 episode of WWE Raw, Rollins said he has two fractures in his lumbar spine. Rollins last wrestled at WWE Superstar Spectacle on September 8.
