Shawn Spears: The Chairman Is Not Gone, He Is Just Hibernating

Shawn Spears will bring the Chairman back when it’s time.

At AEW Fyter Fest 2019, Shawn Spears hit Cody Rhodes with a chair shot to the head and officially became The Chairman of AEW. Spears would carry a chair around with him throughout the early stages of his AEW tenure, using it when he felt necessary.

The chair shot to the head caused a stir in the wrestling community as unprotected chair shots had been a thing of the past, but Cody kept his hands down for the spot.

Speaking on Vibe 105, Spears was asked about the reaction to the chair shot.

“First thing I thought when I hit him was ‘bullseye,’ that’s the first thing I thought. In terms of the backstage, I don’t pay attention to a lot of stuff online, especially since I’ve had my son, I just don’t have the time. Back then, I knew there was a lot of buzz and controversy. All that stuff is above my pay grade, I don’t care. My job is to go out and perform. I had a goal and I accomplished it. You guys are going to say what you’re going to say and watch what you’re going to watch. My job is to go out, perform, and let the chips fall where they may, and then go out and do it again the next week. It was a big moment. The Chairman is not gone, I will say that. The Chairman is just hibernating. He will be back, you will see him again. I will be swinging chairs again very soon,” he said.

Spears hasn’t been on AEW TV since the April 28 episode of AEW Rampage when he teamed with Ricky Starks in a loss to Bullet Club Gold (Jay White & Juice Robinson). He had been using the Perfect 10 persona, which began in NXT, when he was most recently on TV.

Cody previously said that he was taking chair shots back for the boys.
