Samoa Joe: When You’re The Champion, People Come Hunting For You

Samoa Joe discusses a variety of subjects in a local radio interview.

Being the United States Champion means Samoa Joe is no stranger to taking on all challengers. At WrestleMania 35, Joe successfully defended his US Title in a one-minute match against Rey Mysterio. Speaking to Travis Sams of WKDQ, Joe discussed his WrestleMania 35 bout and being the United States Champion.

“You have a jam packed arena with hundreds of thousands of people going crazy. It makes for a unique environment. It got me pretty amped up. I went out there and destroyed my opponent in record time. I actually set a world record for the quickest title defense in WrestleMania history,” said Joe. “When you’re a champion, people come hunting for you because you’re standing on top of the mountain. There’s only one way to look and it’s down on all those trying to get up to you. We’ll get through them one at a time.”

On the subject of having to lug around the US Title through airport security, Joe said, “I’ve carried many championships throughout the years. Obviously, there’s protocol and the TSA guys are digging in your bag and they pull it out, they take a look at you and go, ‘Well, obviously.’ It can be a little bit of a security concern. It’s a large championship with precious metals, gems, and diamonds but I’ve always been serious about my security so, we’ve been doing okay.”

While Joe got the better of Mysterio at WrestleMania 35, Mysterio got a measure of revenge this past Monday on Raw when he defeated Joe in singles competition.
