Samoa Joe On CM Punk’s Reaction To Joe Joining WWE
Fresh off making his long-awaited debut on WWE's main roster, Samoa Joe shared the reaction of his longtime friend and frequent opponent CM Punk when Joe first signed with WWE in 2015.
Joe discussed this and more during a recent appearance on Eyes On The Game.
Joe recalled that Punk spent several years "championing my cause to be in the WWE.
"To see me now, he's like, 'Oh, of course, the minute I'm gone, you're here,' " Joe said during the interview.
Joe went on to describe his relationship with Punk as "a very interesting one", likening their interactions to "brothers who fight all the time."
Punk and Joe had a trio of highly acclaimed matches back in 2004 in Ring of Honor, when Joe was in the midst of a run as ROH World Champion that lasted almost two calendar years. The first two matches in that series ended in 60-minute time limit draws, before Joe finally defeated Punk in their third meeting. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer gave the second match in the trilogy a rare five-star rating.
Punk made his way to WWE in 2005, first signing a developmental contract. He went on to have five separate reigns as a world champion in the promotion, before walking out on a scheduled Raw broadcast the night after the 2014 Royal Rumble. Punk, who has not wrestled since, later made the transition to MMA, where he lost his one and only fight to date in the first round against Mickey Gall at UFC 203.
Joe, meanwhile, went to TNA, where he spent almost a decade before finally signing with WWE in 2015.
Now that Joe is on the main roster, he has a few goals in mind; some things to check off his to do list:
"Me being on Raw, my main goal is the Universal Championship, and you got a lot of top tier competitors kind of vying for that title: Goldberg, you have Brock, you have Roman, you have Kevin Owens, I mean, the current champion now. I have no problem going in there and smashing any of them and taking the belt from them."
Spoken like a true Destroyer.
