Sammy Guevara Said He Was Frustrated With Where He Was In The Indies Before Being Signed By AEW
Sammy Guevara’s run in AEW has given him a spot on Chris Jericho‘s Inner Circle and matches against some of the company’s top stars, but before that time ever came, he was struggling to find a rhythm on the independent scene.
The 26-year-old has been a constant presence on AEW programming, but admitted that when he was a pre-teen, he thought he would be a world champion by this point. He revealed that he wasn’t really happy with where he was in the indies but then got the call to join AEW.
“When I was 11, I thought I’d be world champ by now,” Guevara said. “This year was really up in the air for me. I didn’t know what I was going to do going into it, but I had to do something. I was very frustrated with where I was at on the independent level. I told myself, when I was in Japan, that when I get back to the States, I was going to put everything into it. Before I got a chance to do that, I got the call from AEW. Either way, I would’ve made something happen.”
Guevara said he has learned a lot from just watching Jericho, the current AEW World Champion. By his own admission, 2019 has been a good year for him, but Guevara believes 2020 will be a true breakout year for him.
“The dude makes moments almost every single week. It’s just letting moments sink in, is what I’ve learned just from observing. He doesn’t rush, he takes his time with everything he does. “I just feel like this will be when a lot of people wake up on me. A lot of people have already, but a lot of people will start to understand. People will say that 2019 was one of the best years of my life, but in the next 10 years, they’re going to look back on it and say, it was pretty good, but that was nothing compared to what he was about to do. People told me I had an attitude. I was just confident, and I’m confident 2020 will be the year of Sammy G,” Guevara said.
