Samantha Starr says Jake Roberts has taught her about storytelling.
Starr comes from a rich wrestling family. Her father is Sam Houston, her mother is Baby Doll, and her uncle is WWE Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts. She is also the granddaughter of Grizzly Smith. Starr has been carving out her own legacy, and she wrestled for NWA on multiple occasions in recent months.
In an interview with Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald, Starr was asked to describe what she has learned from Jake “The Snake.” She noted that he has taught her that, as a performer, one doesn’t have to yell and scream to deliver their message. Starrr referenced his promo style and called him a genius when it comes to psychology.
“I was taught that if you have a message, and you can capture an audience without yelling, that’s when it becomes believable. You don’t have to go out there, yell and scream, and throw your arms up. If you can go out there and deliver your message without screaming, that’s good storytelling. So that was very important. You don’t see Jake screaming. You don’t see Jake throwing a fit and [going], ‘I’m gonna go beat this guy up.’ It was also almost unhinged. It was the mental attack before the physical attack. It’s genius. He is an absolute genius when it comes to psychology,” Starr said.
Roberts remains signed with AEW, though he infrequently appears on AEW TV these days. He recently commented on his standing in the company. Click here to see what he had to say.
NWA President Billy Corgan recently stated that interest in the NWA has increased probably 500% over the last year. More information is available here.
On January 31, Starr will compete as a member of Team Tyrus in the Champions Series Final on a live episode of NWA Powerrr. Fightful will have coverage of the show as it airs.
