ROH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
ROH WORLD CHAMPION “ALMIGHTY” CHRISTOPHER DANIELS vs. “THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE” CODY
Christopher Daniels completed a 23-year odyssey at 15th Anniversary when he reached the pinnacle of professional wrestling, capturing the ROH World Championship from Adam Cole. Daniels’ win erased his name from the discussion of “Best wrestler to never hold a World Championship” and cemented his already-worth resume as a sure-fire Hall of Fame wrestler.
But the honeymoon was short-lived. To ensure Daniels victory, Daniels’ partner Frankie Kazarian infiltrated Bullet Club and the Smartest Men in the Room double crossed Bullet Club to help Daniels capture the gold. That action has painted a target big, bright, and bold on the back of the champion.
That’s where “The American Nightmare”, a man beholden to no company, sensed an opportunity.
Since reaching the top of the mountain, Daniels has been eager to prove that not only has he shed labels and blazed trails at age 46, but that he has the ability to become the greatest ROH World Champion of all-time. It is this confidence that Cody hoped to prey on at War of the Worlds. Jay Lethal earned a title shot but Cody was able to get under the skin of Daniels and insert himself into a Triple Threat for the World Championship in New York City. And Cody’s plan almost worked.
Late in the match, it came down to Lethal and Cody, two men tied into a feud dating back to Final Battle after Daniels had gone through a table. Cody, looking to take advantage of Lethal’s knee that he had injured earlier in the bout, locked in a move his father used to great success, the figure four. As Lethal writhed in pain, Daniels went for an all or nothing Best Moonsault Ever. Daniels’ connected on Cody, winning the match and leaving NYC with the gold around his waist.
But, things weren’t so simple. Cody argued on ROH Television, using an observation by Color Commentator Colt Cabana as his support, that Lethal’s shoulders went to the match upon impact of the moonsault. With Cody in control of the figure four, he would be responsible for the pin on Lethal. Cody argued that the shoulders of Lethal went to the mat milliseconds before Daniels officially secured the cover and that Cody is the rightful ROH World Champion.
Cody and his lawyers successfully petitioned for a one-on-one rematch and “The American Nightmare” will get it at Best in the World, live on Pay Per View! For Cody, ahead of him lies an opportunity to get revenge for Bullet Club, taking something from Daniels that means more to him than his career itself. For Daniels, it is a chance to defend his honor and to keep the ROH World Championship away from a member of Bullet Club, a free agent who could take the championship wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
Can Daniels fend off a Bullet Club change from a man who has been dishonorable from day one in a ROH ring? Or will “The American Nightmare” spoil Daniels’ fairy tale ending and take the ROH World Championship to a place it has never been? Tune into or join us at Best in the World to find out!
