Rey Mysterio Thought He Was Losing His Mask At Halloween Havoc 97

Rey Mysterio shares a behind the scenes story of his famous Halloween Havoc 1997 bout against Eddie Guerrero.

Chris Jericho recorded a special Tribute to Eddie Guerrero podcast during the first-ever Rock N Wrestling Rager at Sea cruise. Konnan, Diamond Dallas Page, and Rey Mysterio were all guests as part of the podcast. During their reflection, Mysterio discussed his Halloween Havoc 97 bout with Guerrero.

The bout, which was billed as Title vs. Mask, is regarded as one of the best cruiserweight matches of all-time. Mysterio came away with the victory, capturing the WCW Cruiserweight Title in the process, but he was led to believe that we would be losing his mask in the weeks leading up to the event.

“Eric Bischoff was messing with me. I arrived to that show under the conclusion that I was supposed to lose my mask,” said Mysterio.

Jericho noted, “That’s when (Bischoff) was on a tear that all the luchadors had to lose their mask.”

Mysterio continued, “Konnan and I discussed the situation. (Konnan told me), ‘Don’t go to the show. Don’t show up. Tell them you’re hurt.’ I got a call at home from Eric, because he found out I wasn’t going to the show, he said, ‘If you don’t show up, you’ll be under breach of contract. And you know what’s going to happen.’ I said, ‘Damn, I gotta go.’ I showed up, I was looking for Eric to convince him to not take the mask off. Nothing. Sunday, me and Eddie go over the match and have it laid out. 20 minutes before the match, Arn (Anderson), our agent, comes over and says the finish is changed and I was going over. I was nervous. ‘What are we gonna do Eddie?’ ‘Shut up, just listen to me.’ And that’s exactly what I did. And he put me over like a million bucks.”
