Rey Mysterio: More Guys Who Weren’t Being Used Are Getting An Opportunity Under Paul Heyman
Rey Mysterio has finished the year strong on television, engaging in a feud with WWE Champion Brock Lesnar and winning the United States Championship. And in his feud against Lesnar, Rey brought his son Dominik along for the ride.
Dominik was an integral part of Rey’s feud with Lesnar as it was Lesnar’s attack on Rey’s son that really ignited the angle. Dominik appeared at WWE Survivor Series, hitting a Double 619 with his father on Lesnar. While Rey came up short in trying to capture the WWE Title, he was happy to share the ring with his son and credits Paul Heyman for putting the feud together.
“I think, to be honest, to give someone credit for all of that, it would be Paul Heyman. We have to give credit to the geniuses behind the curtain and the ones that come up with the storylines and whatnot. I want to say since Paul Heyman took over RAW, the writing team has given a lot of opportunities to names that weren’t being used and I think that has to do with a combination of Paul and his team that he works around,” Rey told Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT.
Heyman was named Executive Director of Raw in June.
While Rey is arguably the most popular Mexican star in US history, a new wave of Mexican stars are on the rise in WWE. Andrade is a former NXT Champion who continues to be a featured player on WWE Raw, Humberto Carrillo has recently stepped into the Raw spotlight, and Angel Garza recently won the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. Rey sees big things for all three superstars in the future.
“Without a doubt [Andrade could be a world champion]. I see Humberto Carrillo, I see Angel Garza in NXT and a couple of other names that still haven’t gotten that right push yet, but it will come. It will come. This runs in our blood, it’s a part of our heritage and our culture. I truly believe Andrade could become a world champion. I would not back down one bit if he wanted a shot at the United States title either. I would give him an opportunity, just because I love to compete. I think the Latinos bring a great mix of wrestling into WWE that had been missed for such a long time,” he said.
Rey was almost set to defend his United States Championship against Andrade or Carrillo, but the Number One Contenders Gauntlet Match on Raw ended in no contest after Andrade planted Carrillo with a DDT on concrete. Instead, Mysterio will defend his US Title against Seth Rollins on Raw.
