Report: WWE Scraps Plans For Tiered Network, Still Scheduled To Add Independent Promotions
The long-rumored tiered WWE Network remains on hold, but good news could be coming.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reports, as of now, WWE has scrapped plans for the tiered Network. However, Mike Johnson of PWInsider reports Independent wrestling content is still scheduled to hit the Network at some point.
WWE has the rights to PROGRESS and ICW. The company also recently purchased EVOLVE and its content library along with the library of Dragon Gate USA.
Interim Chief Financial Officer Frank Riddick said the purchase of EVOLVE was a content deal and small in terms of investment.
The tiered Network has been long-rumored but has yet to come to fruition. Former WWE Co-President George Barrios laid out plans for a free tier, a regular tier, and a premium tier.
WWE launched the free tier earlier this year, doing away with the 30-day free trial. Vince McMahon said during the second-quarter 2020 financials call that WWE hasn’t been hurt by the switch.
WWE reported paid subscribers are up to 1.69 million in their second-quarter earnings report.
