Punk’s Fight Is Well…Punk’s Story

One of the most talked about fights that will be taking place this coming Saturday Night at UFC 203 will be a welterweight division attraction between pro wrestler turned MMA fighter CM Punk (Real Name: Phil Brooks) and undefeated prospect Mickey Gall.

As a professional wrestler, Punk accomplished just about everything that one can dream of, become a WWE World Heavyweight Champion, WWE Intercontinental Champion, WWE Tag Team Champion, Ring Of Honor World Heavyweight Champion, Ring Of Honor Tag Team Champion and to many more accolades to be listing here. However, with all of those accomplishments comes a lot of respect in the pro wrestling world, but on Saturday Night, Punk will not be stepping into the wrestling ring, he will be stepping into the octagon and the MMA world.

CM Punk recently sat down with USA Today to talk about his UFC debut and what the expectations are for this fight, Punk stated…

“People expect me to get knocked out. People expect me to get starched in 30 seconds. The people who see me work here every day expect me to win.”

Punk is not taking his duties in the octagon lightly, as he is being trained by world renowned trainer Duke Roufus, who is responsible for training such great stars at Anthony Pettis, Sergio Pettis, Ben Askren and a host of other top MMA fighters.

Punk has been dealing with his fair share of critics as well, both from the MMA world and pro wrestling world, but this is nothing new to the former pro wrestling champion, but it is his trainer in Duke Roufus that said…

“If you focus on criticism, you’re never going to get anywhere…You’ve got to focus on results. The results are done here, and the results are done in the arena. That’s what we’re focusing on. I don’t sit around all day and read the Internet. I love the fans, but that’s not what drives us. If you go into a fight worried about that, you’ve already (lost).”

Even UFC President Dana White has been chiming in on the whole situation surrounding one of his bigger signings in recent years, White said to USA Today

“Everyone at the gym has been raving about his work ethic, his attitude and the strides he’s made…He’s the type of guy who is willing to start at the bottom and work his way up, and I think he’s earned a lot of respect from his teammates as a result. There has been zero ego with CM Punk.”

However, when it is all said and done, this story is not really about Duke Roufus, Dana White or even Mickey Gall…it is all about CM Punk…

“Without sounding disrespectful to (Gall), this is my story…This is about me wanting and almost needing to do something just to prove to myself that I can. For me, it’s not about the destination – it’s about the journey. That, to me, is a microcosm of life.”

CM Punk will be fighting Mickey Gall this Saturday Night at UFC 203, which is taking place from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
