Paul Wight Hopes To Bring Captain Insano To AEW Grand Slam Australia, Wants To Go Out Like Sting Did
Paul Wight is hoping to bring Captain Insano to Brisbane.
Since arriving to the company in 2021, Paul Wight has dropped a number of teases about bringing the Captain Insano character to AEW. As of publish time, the character has yet to wrestle for the company but has instead appearing in pre-taped segments with The Acclaimed and MJF/Adam Cole.
While speaking to Fightful and Downunder The Ring for a new interview, Wight said that he hopes to bring Captain Insano to AEW Grand Slam in February 2025.
“I have heard from him. I heard his fat ass had a knee surgery a few months ago, but was hoping to be back real soon and definitely I hope he’s going to compete in February here in Brisbane. So yeah, a lot of that was intellectual property and Tony Khan actually, ‘cause I lost the Big Show. That’s a WWE intellectual property.”
Wight went on to confirm that Tony Khan was able to secure the IP rights for the character.
“Which is tough when you build a brand for 20 years, but it’s business, I understand it is what it is. But building yourself a new identity is like starting all over. People are always gonna identify you as one thing. You’re like, ‘Yeah, I’m not that guy anymore, I’m this other guy.’ Captain Insano was a pretty cool gift. Tony Khan worked it out, got the intellectual property rights for me. So we’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on that, and a lot of it, and I’ll just be honest, a lot of it’s been my fault, having surgeries and stuff like that.”
Wight went on to say that he wants to be at 100% when they decide to pull the trigger on the Captain Insano character.
“It’s about me getting in the gym, training, getting ready where I feel comfortable. ‘Cause it’s basically a one shot run. I can’t pull the trigger on this half ass and go out and fail. When I pull the trigger on Captain Insano, it’s gotta be 100%. We run that ‘til wheels fall off and then we ride off into the sunset like Pale Rider. I just wanna make sure that when I bring that character out, whatever Tony asks me to do, I can do. Whether it’s tag, singles, working twice a week, three times a week, whatever it is, I’m able to do it. That’s why I’ve been really haven’t been doing a lot of things on AEW because being the awesome boss that Tony Khan and he’s given me the time to to get basically get my shit straight and get ready for it. I mean, believe me, there’s an unbelievable amount of pressure on myself to get this done and get this in a way where the fans are appreciative of seeing me compete again and not like, ‘Oh, that’s sad. Shoot him. Put him out of his misery like Old Yeller.’ Take me out back and put me down. I don’t want to get put down yet. I kind of want to go out like Sting did, have a nice little run, have some great matches, work with some of this amazing young talent we have in AEW and then slide out. That goal accomplished and then I’ll move to New York and become a world famous playwright. That’s a joke because I can’t spell.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Wight talked about Sting saving him from a Hulk Hogan rib back in 1995. Learn more about those comments by clicking here.
