As announced by NFL.com and other outlets, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the Modern-Era players who have been nominated for election. In order to be eligible, players had to play for at least five full seasons, and they must have been retired for at least five years.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the 173 Modern-Era players who have been nominated for election in 2024. This grouping is just the first wave; a semifinal group of 25 players will be announced in November. The next group will only have 10 to 15 nominees. The selection committee will vote on five finalists. Seniors finalists will also be considered.
McAfee was named as one of the nominees for the punter position. Fellow former punters Darren Bennett, Jeff Feagles, Sean Landeta, Shane Lechler, Brad Maynard, Pat McAfee, Brian Moorman, and Matt Turk were also announced.
The Indianapolis Colts drafted McAfee in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The team went to the Super Bowl in McAfee’s rookie season. McAfee retired in 2017; during his career, he was a First-Team All Pro, and he made the Pro Bowl twice.
In recent years, McAfee has been the host of his successful Pat McAfee Show. He has also crossed over into the world of sports entertainment, as he had a brief run in NXT before he joined the SmackDown commentary team.
McAfee competed at WrestleMania 38 and SummerSlam 2022. His announcing duties have been on hold since he joined ESPN College GameDay in September 2022. McAfee returned at both WWE Royal Rumble 2023 and WrestleMania 39. He also made a surprise appearance on the September 15 episode of WWE SmackDown.
