Nick Aldis Discusses Getting John Goodman To Do Voiceover For NWA 73 Cold Open
NWA 73 celebrated wrestling at the Chase in St. Louis, and John Goodman provided his voice for the cold open.
NWA 73 was headlined by Nick Aldis putting the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship on the line against Trevor Murdoch, who put his career on the line. Murdoch was victorious, ending Aldis’ reign. While Aldis was the face of the NWA, he contribute plenty behind the scenes, including securing John Goodman for the NWA 73 cold open.
“As most people know, I wore a lot of hats in the NWA, especially in the pandemic and after Dave Lagana left, I took on editing, directing, and producing. I loved doing all that and I’m so glad that I did teach myself how to edit and spend a lot of the pandemic trying to hone those skills and work on,” he said on AdFreeShows.
Speaking of Goodman, Aldis said, “My friend Steve just threw it out there, ‘I can text John Goodman.’ Next thing you know, I have an email from John Goodman, ‘Hey Nick, I hope this is okay.’ I was like shaking. ‘John Goodman just read my script and now I’m going to make a video with John Goodman doing the narration. That’s nuts.’ When we put that out, I was so nervous about how that was going to be received. If this gets criticized, I’m not worried about myself….John Goodman did the voiceover, it can’t suck. Fortunately, it was well received. I get as much excitement and satisfaction doing that sort of stuff as I do working. Through different people I’ve worked with, professionally, that’s starting to be a little more well-known, which is good for me. As I start looking ahead to the next five-ten years, that’s definitely where I want to be focusing my efforts.”
Aldis continued, explaining his desire to do more on the production side in wrestling.
“That’s more what I want to be doing, what I want to move into, that’s where my passion is. It’s one of the reasons I decided to give my notice (from NWA) and move on. It wasn’t just about me having enough of the talent, although that was definitely the case, it was as much about, I want to have the freedom to just try shit and not be expected to do it with the NWA. I shot a pilot for an idea I had for a show a few weeks ago in St. Louis. The guys who I did that with were guys I met when we did stuff in St. Louis. I’ve made a lot of contacts, though I met them through wrestling, aren’t necessarily wrestling related. I want to have the ability to stick a few irons in the fire,” he said.
Elsewhere during the interview, Aldis discussed his free agent status and waiting for the right opportunity. You can find his full comments by clicking here.
Aldis is set to be part of a joint event with Oceania Pro Wrestling and Starrcast in late 2023. Fans can learn more details about the event by clicking here.
