New Intercontinental Champion Crowned On WWE SmackDown

A new Intercontinental Champion has been crowned.

After weeks of competing in a tournament to determine a new champion, AJ Styles bested Daniel Bryan after the two went to battle for more than 30 minutes on SmackDown. Styles has now won the Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his WWE career.

The title became vacant a couple of months ago after Sami Zayn was unable to defend it. As such, a tournament was crowned with Bryan, Styles, Elias, Jeff Hardy, Sheamus, Drew Gulak, King Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura all competing. Elias and Hardy, who were originally booked to compete in the semifinals, were taken out after the car accident that opened the May 29 episode of SmackDown.

Styles got a bye to the finals, but Bryan faced Sheamus, who won a Battle Royal to get into the semifinals, with Bryan picking up the victory. Styles now adds the Intercontinental title to his WWE resume, which already includes multiple reigns as the WWE and United States Champion.
