MTV Movie & TV Awards Honouring Dwayne Johnson with ‘Generation’ Award

MTV is bestowing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with their ‘Generation’ Award.

Awarded to “beloved actors whose diverse contributions to both film and television have turned them into household names in the industry,” Johnson will become the fifteenth recipient of the award. Previous honorees include Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, Johnny Depp, Jamie Foxx, Mark Wahlberg, Robert Downey Jr., Will Smith, The Fast and the Furious franchise, and Chris Pratt.

Amy Doyle, general manager of MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo, had this to say about the announcement:

Johnson is an icon on both film and TV who has become one of the most beloved actors of our generation. Throughout his career, Johnson has proven to be the ultimate badass – an action star with a flair for comedy, one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and a true family man. He continues to captivate his audience worldwide and we are thrilled to celebrate him with the Generation Award.

Johnson, who previously hosted the MTV Movie & TV Awards in 2016 with Central Intelligence co-star Kevin Hart, took to Instagram to express his gratitude and look back to when Hollywood was just a dream.

Waxing 29yr old poetic and eyebrows —-‍ in this 2001 @MTV interview. This weekend I’ll have the privilege of being honored by MTV for the ICON GENERATION AWARD. Shaking my head as I’m watching this kid talk about his long term goals in Hollywood, WWE and beyond. In 2001 there was no “Hollywood blueprint” for a guy like me — a 6’5, 275lb half Samoan/ half Black pro wrestler with absurdly waxed eyebrows (Jesus Christ —-‍) with a southern accent. I was and still am, a walking contradiction who was willing to open my mind like a sponge to learn, put in the hard work, take the big risks and eventually I figured out that the most powerful thing I could ever be to Hollywood and the world – is myself. Regardless of the road you’re all on, be YOU and if a blueprint for your goals doesn’t exist – fuck it – create your own. And for the love of all things cool, dudes please don’t wax your eyebrows like I did. #IconGenerationAward #MTVAwards #BeYOU #ChaseYourGreatness

Johnson returns to theatres on August 2nd in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

WWE’s presence at the ceremony, however, stretches beyond the Hall of Famer. Last month it was revealed that Roman Reigns would contend for Best Real-Life Hero, while Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair‘s WrestleMania 35 Main Event had been put forward for Best Fight.

The 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards will air Monday, June 17 at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
