Mick Foley Believes Chyna Could Have Become WWE Champion

Mick Foley believes there was a genuine possibility Chyna could have become WWE World Champion.

Joanie “Chyna” Laurer, rose to stardom in the WWE Attitude Era. As the bodyguard for Triple H, Chyna eventually became a wrestler in her own right and broke through glass ceilings as she began to wrestle men, eventually becoming WWE Intercontinental Champion at WWE No Mercy 1999. Before her Intercontinental Championship victory, Chyna was briefly the number one contender for the WWE Championship and was scheduled to face Stone Cold Steve Austin at the 1999 WWE SummerSlam event.

While that match ultimately did not happen and Mick Foley would end up winning the WWE Championship at SummerSlam in 1999, Foley recently stated on his podcast, Foley is Pod, that he believes there was a real possibility that Joanie absolutely could have become WWE Champion. to back up his claim, “The Hardcore Legend” would reference several individuals who would become World Champions around that time in pro wrestling; namely, Vince Russo, Vince McMahon, and David Arquette.

“I do. I do. I mean, look, Vince McMahon was World Champion. David Arquette was World Champion. Vince Russo was World Champion. Yeah, I think there’s a very real chance that she could have.”

Chyna never became WWE Champion but did have two runs as WWE Intercontinental Champion. WWE would honor her history as the Intercontinental Champion by releasing a special Signature Series championship belt. Learn more about that at this link.

Elsewhere on this podcast, Mick Foley spoke about the upcoming A&E documentary centered around “The 9th Wonder of the World” and revealed that he has recently been hunting down some of her memorabilia. Learn more here.
