Matt Hardy: I Genuinely Don’t Know, But If I Had To Guess I Think ‘The Devil’ Is Adam Cole

Matt Hardy believes that it would make the most sense from a storyline standpoint for Adam Cole to be revealed as AEW’s ‘Devil.’ 

A devil is running around wreaking havoc in AEW and sticking very close to Maxwell Jacob Friedman. While ‘The Devil’ has yet to personally attack MJF, this individual, apparently orchestrating a group of several masked cohorts, has attacked The Acclaimed, newfound friends of MJF and his opponent at AEW Full Gear, Switchblade Jay White. This particular individual is wearing MJF’s devil mask which Maxwell says was stolen from him. 

On the most recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Hardy gave his thoughts on who he thinks the mystery person could be, and when his co-host, Jon Alba, said that he thinks “The Devil” might be Adam Cole. Hardy admits that that is his primary guess as well. 

While it is stressed that Hardy has no internal information regarding who this person might be, Hardy fully believes that it would make the most storyline sense for MJF’s ROH Tag Team Championship partner to be revealed as the villain all along. 

“If I had to guess, that would be my guess as well,” he says. “I genuinely don’t [know]. I mean, that’s just like, from basic storytelling and just — from basic storytelling and which direction they would go, so yeah, I have no idea.” 

Hardy would later go on to talk about why Adam feels like it makes the most sense from a big-picture point of view and gives his thoughts on who could potentially be under the masks. 

“[Adam Cole & MJF] bonded and their chemistry was so strong as they were doing that odd bedfellows tag team deal. They win the [ROH World Tag Team Championship] and they are best friends. They get through that World Title match, MJF retains. So, it’s really interesting. They have a very intriguing dichotomy,” Matt says. “Adam, I feel, makes the most sense in the big scheme of things. Could it be The Kingdom [under the masks]? Could be those guys tied into it? Possibly, like in a faction, you have the Undisputed Kingdom ERA or whatever supergroup, which I don’t know, that doesn’t necessarily seem like it would fit perfectly in because I feel like everybody in that group needs to have some sort of personal issue with Max, and they’re not as strongly bonded or tied with Max. I do think it would be, most likely, Adam Cole would be my guess. I’m just not sure who the guys are going to be. I’m really curious of the direction that AEW goes with this.” 

Adam Cole unfortunately suffered an injury that required him to have ankle surgery. However, he has remained on television through brief segments and video calls.
