Luchasaurus Discusses Dusty Rhodes’ Influence On His Character
In 2012, Luchasaurus signed a developmental contract with FCW/NXT.
Performing under the name Judas Devlin, he didn’t gain much traction on the brand and was eventually released in 2014 due to a hip injury. However, he learned some lessons during his time in WWE developmental as he was coached by Dusty Rhodes.
“[Dusty] was one of my only supporters down there,” Luchasaurus said on AEW Unrestricted. “I was always trying to find a way to put my Master’s Degree stuff in a wrestling context. In promo class with Dusty, you would try different things all the time and he always had me try different ways to pinpoint how to do that and we couldn’t figure it out. A lot of the stuff I do now, and the way I just talk, is just me being myself, which is what he liked. As soon as I became a dinosaur and stopped trying to be a human, my sense of humor became an absurdity kind of thing and we made it work. I wish he could’ve been there to see that because I think he would’ve loved as soon as I put a mask on. I never would have thought to do this on my own, it just organically happened. Working with him on the promo stuff, it was cool to see it come around a few years later. Everything he taught me just kinda clicked. Without that, it would have been tough for me to dive into something like this.”
After being released by WWE, Luchasaurus returned to the ring in 2016 for Lucha Underground. He signed with AEW in 2019.
He is currently teaming with Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt as the Jurassic Express in AEW. The trio will face The Dark Order in six-man tag team action on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite.
