Lita On Dealing With Social Media Criticism

Lita admits things were easier in her day. At least when it came to immediate feedback.

Today’s wrestler not only has to deal with everything inside of the ring, they have to deal with those online who have instant access to voicing their opinion. Creep into the mentions of any professional wrestler, or anyone with clout for that matter, and you’ll find someone who has an issue with something that person did.

Speaking to The Mirror, Lita discussed the kind of feedback she would deal with during her time and how that differs from today’s social media driven world.

“Oh my gosh! Trish [Stratus] and I have talked about this because we really didn’t have this; yes we had the instant feedback from the fans live, and they’re never shy,” said Lita. “So we got our share of them looking at us in the eye and yelling, and telling us exactly how they felt, which didn’t feel great all of the time.” Lita continued, “But, now, it’s almost like people have instant access [to you] and it’s part of your job almost, to post and let everyone know where you are – it’s a whole separate job to add to your already-demanding job.”

Lita admitted that, even though she no longer wrestles, she goes dark on social media to get away from the  constant notifications. A quick glance at her Twitter account shows she’s not overly active, especially compared to most WWE superstars.

“It’s interesting how your brain works because 100 people can say yours was the best match ever, and one person will say ‘that match sucked, you were sloppy, I don’t like you and you don’t deserve the title’, or whatever it is,” she said. “People can say ‘I don’t care what people think’ and ‘it doesn’t bother me’, but it does.”

Lita will open herself up to such criticism and get a small taste of what WWE superstars go through on social media when she returns to the ring on Oct. 28 at Evolution against Mickie James.
