Mills Lane, a legendary referee in the boxing world, has passed away at the age of 85 years old.
On December 6, Mills’ son Tommy Lane shared the news with the Reno Gazette Journal. He noted that Mills had been in hospice for the last few days prior to his passing.
“He took a significant decline in his overall situation. It was a quick departure. He was comfortable and he was surrounded by his family,” Tommy said.
Mills officiated the infamous boxing bout between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in 1997, where Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear and ultimately got disqualified. Mills then retired in 1998, and he was memorably featured in the “Celebrity Deathmatch” show on MTV, which depicted brutal fights between animated versions of popular celebrities. He also hosted his own show, “Judge Mills Lane”.
In 2013, Mills was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Fightful sends its condolences to Mills’ friends and family.
