Kurt Angle Reveals When Vince McMahon Offered Him The Raw GM Position

Kurt Angle briefly touches on his time as WWE Raw GM and the way he originally saw his comeback to WWE taking shape.

Kurt Angle was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017 and two nights later on Monday Night Raw, he became the general manager for the red brand. This run as general manager would last for two years until WWE decided to pull the plug on the general manager concept just before WrestleMania 35, Kurt Angle’s last WrestleMania.

Speaking on his podcast, Kurt revealed that he only found out about the GM position right before he went out to accept his Hall of Fame award. Vince McMahon broke the news to Kurt Angle himself and Kurt Angle went along with it as long as he was assured that he would be able to step into the ring again.

“The night of the Hall of Fame right before I went out to accept the award, Vince McMahon came into my locker room, the room they had set up for me backstage and he said, ‘Hey, we want you to be general manager of Raw starting tomorrow.’ He offered me a deal and I said, ‘Well, I still want to wrestle.’ He said, ‘We’ll get around to that, eventually. Don’t worry about that, we’ll get there.’ I said, ‘Okay, as long as I know I’m going to wrestle.’ So, I got the offer right before the Hall of Fame. The next [Monday], I started the general manager job.”

One of the main storylines during Kurt Angle’s short tenure as Monday Night Raw GM would see Jason Jordan revealed as the illegitimate son of Kurt Angle.

Kurt Angle says that he was tentatively excited about this pairing because he had initially had the idea of coming in as a wrestler and becoming world champion with Jason Jordan and Chad Gable, American Alpha, by his side as the Tag Team Champions, just like in 2003 with Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas, Team Angle.

“Well, I was excited because I wanted to pair up with Jason and Chad when they were tag team partners and I wanted to wrestle and I wanted to be the World Champion and have them be the Tag Team Champions, just like Team Angle, and I thought it made a lot of sense.

“They decided that I was going to have an illegitimate son and they weren’t sure who it was going to be and they decided to pick Jason over Chad and, you know, I’m not sure why. It might have been a politically correct move, but I was happy I was excited about it because Jason is a great talent and he was improving every week, his chops were improving, his work was improving. He was getting a lot better. He was on his way to main event status until he hurt his neck. That’s where the program ended and I was stuck high and dry without a partner for the next WrestleMania because that’s who I was going to wrestle was Jason.”

Recently, Chad Gable stated on an episode of WWE’s The Bump that Jason Jordan is working on a comeback to the squared circle. Learn more here.
