Kurt Angle Felt He Could’ve Had A World Title Run Before Retiring
Kurt Angle retired following WrestleMania 35 where he lost to Baron Corbin. Leading up to his retirement match, Angle had a series of matches against some of his old rivals like Rey Mysterio, AJ Styles, and Samoa Joe plus new faces like Chad Gable and Apollo Crews.
On November 5, 2018, Angle faced Drew McIntyre, who he had previously wrestled in IMPACT when McIntyre worked as Drew Galloway. It was that match where Angle realized how he would be used moving forward and when he flirted with the idea of retirement.
“The Drew McIntyre match, when I had to really really really put him over. I even tapped out to my own ankle lock. It was complete domination. I read between the lines and realized the company had no plans moving forward with me. If I continue to do this, this is what I would continue to do. I’m going to lose quite a bit. There’s no problem with that, but being at the level I was, I just felt I could’ve given more and possibly been in a World Title run. Not saying, I deserve to be, but if I had that option, I would have motivated myself even more to get more prepared,” said Angle on The Kurt Angle Show.
Angle served as the Raw General Manager before getting back in the ring and was paired with Jason Jordan, who was revealed as his son. Angle had grander plans than being a father to Jordan.
“I wanted to pair up with Jason and Chad when they were tag team partners. I wanted to wrestle and be the World Champion and have them be the Tag Team Champions, just like Team Angle. I thought it made a lot of sense. They decided I was going to have an illegitimate son. They weren’t sure who it was going to be and they decided to pick Jason,” he said.
Unfortunately, Jordan suffered a neck injury in early 2018 and was sent home by Angle, effectively writing him off television. As a result of Jordan’s injury, the father-son storyline never reached a conclusion.
Elsewhere during the podcast, Angle recalled Cedric Alexander not listening to Vince McMahon and being punished as a result. You can find his full comments by clicking here.
