Kenny Omega Wins Unified IMPACT World Championship At Rebellion
Kenny Omega and Rich Swann faced off in a historic Title vs Title Match at IMPACT Rebellion.
It was just over one month ago when IMPACT Executive Scott D’Amore announced that the winner of Rich Swann and Moose’s World Championship Unification Match at Sacrifice would face AEW World Champion Kenny Omega at Rebellion, with both promotions top titles on the line.
The two companies have been crossing over ever since IMPACT’s Don Callis helped Omega defeat Jon Moxley for the AEW Championship at the Winter is Coming edition of Dynamite on December 2, 2020.
Tonight’s match also featured two referees – Brian Hebner representing IMPACT and Aubrey Edwards representing AEW. This was arranged earlier in the night after Tony Khan and Scott D’Amore had a disagreement over who would officiate. Khan took a shot at Hebner’s family, saying “No one with that last name has ever screwed anybody;” a reference to his father Earl’s involvement in the 1997 Montreal Screwjob. In addition to the dual referees, the former voice of NXT Mauro Ranallo was on commentary.
The two fighters had a back and forth encounter, with Omega controlling much of the action. He made a conscious effort throughout the match to target Swann’s neck, a tactic to make his One-Winged Angel more effective. Rich mounted several comebacks during the match, too, hitting Omega with cutters, splashes, and stiff kicks to the head. Omega tried to introduce a chair after Hebner was knocked out, but Aubrey took it away from him. After a couple of precarious-looking top rope spots and a missed Phoenix Splash, Omega took control with a pair of suplexes, a handful of V-Triggers – even taunting Eddie Edwards and Willie Mack on the outside of the ring with a lifeless Swann – before finally hitting his finisher for the victory.
Tony Khan watching ringside and Scott D’Amore watching backstage both showed their appreciation, clapping after the match.
Kenny Omega now holds the AEW World Championship, the IMPACT Unified World Championship, and the AAA Mega Championship. If the promises leading up to the match are to be believed, Kenny Omega will now be appearing at the IMPACT Zone and on Dynamite regularly, fulfilling his obligations to both companies.
