Former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega made his return on the May 1 episode of AEW Dynamite after having been absent due to diverticulitis since December. He discussed his recovery and vowed to exhaust every option. As he started to call out The Young Bucks (Matthew and Nicholas Jackson) for attacking Tony Khan, their Elite stablemate Kazuchika Okada came out and confronted Omega.

Omega noted that they had a “bit of a rivalry” in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. He told Okada to give him a couple months, and they could settle it in an AEW ring. After Okada called himself The Best Bout Machine, Jack Perry snuck in and attacked Omega. The Elite then attacked Omega until TR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) made the save. When Omega was being loaded into an ambulance, The Elite attacked him again.

Omega and Okada had a storied rivalry in NJPW, as they clashed on numerous occasions. The two rivals faced each other at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11, where Okada beat Omega to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Okada later fought Omega to a time-limit draw at NJPW Dominion 2017. Omega went on to defeat Okada to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at NJPW Dominion 2018. They last faced off at NJPW Fighting Spirt Unleashed 2018, where Okada and Tomohiro Ishii lost to Omega and Kota Ibushi.
