Kenny Omega Says He’s Leaving New Japan Pro Wrestling

Some breaking news concerning the future of Kenny Omega.

The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega who lost the coveted title to Hiroshi Tanahashi two days ago in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 13 revealed to the Tokyo Sports newspaper that he is departing from New Japan Pro Wrestling. Omega gave a few comments to the publication and stated the following:

(Transcript by way of NJPW announcer Chris Charlton):

There is no real place for me to fit, so it’s best for me not to be in (NJPW). I can’t be there working under Tanahashi. I don’t think he’s surpassed me, don’t think he’s better. If we can, I want to face him again. But I need time away, and not just from New Japan.’

Omega said during the interview that the company is becoming Tanahashi’s again and for him, as of right now it is best to take a brief break and come up with a different strategy. Kenny added that if the opportunity to have a rematch presented itself one day, he would like to do it but right now is not the time. The Tokyo Sports article also noted that Kenny’s choices are likely narrowed down to Cody and The Young Bucks’ All Elite Wrestling promotion or the WWE. Omega himself did not comment on what’s next in the cards for him but he did say that whether it’d be WWE or AEW, both fan-bases would be happy he is heading there.

“If I go to WWE, the fans there will be pleased, and the fans will be pleased if I go to AEW.” Omega said. “I want to be in a place where Kenny is going to be happy.”

As more information on Omega’s next move comes to the light, we will continue to update you here on Fightful.
