JTG Recalls Walking On Eggshells In WWE Upon Return, Wanting To Detach From Cryme Tyme Image

Cryme Tyme (JTG & Shad Gaspard) had two different runs during their time in WWE. They were first called up from OVW in September 2006 and stayed a year on the main roster before being released following an incident with referee.

“We got into a situation with another tag team, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, a rib gone bad. We did our finishing move on the referee. A big ‘no no.’ We got released, were gone for six months, and came back the day after WrestleMania,” recalled JTG on Chasing Glory with Lilian Garcia

The team was brought back in 2008 to pick up their feud with Lance Murdoch and Trevor Murdoch, but they weren’t entirely comfortable backstage.

“We were walking on eggshells for a couple of months,” commented JTG. “In wrestling, there are a lot of unspoken rules. We were on the road for a while and it was still something we had to learn. We adjusted pretty quickly and the second run was a lot more fun than the first one.”

Gaspard and JTG stayed together until 2010 when Gaspard turned heel. As explained by JTG, the duo were ready to split, but JTG was unsure of where he would take his character.

“We both, at that time when they split us up, wanted to split up. Cryme Tyme was easy and fun, but it ran its course. We wanted to see how we would do as singles stars. I wanted to have a long feud with Shad, but it was short-lived. I had the look and charisma but am I still going to hold on to the Cryme Tyme image? I wanted to detach myself from that,” he said.

The split didn’t benefit either man as Gaspard was released by the end of the year and JTG was never elevated before his 2014 release.

Elsewhere on the podcast, JTG revealed WWE had plans to do a Where Are They Now? With Cryme Tyme before the pandemic and untimely passing of Gaspard. You can find his full comments by clicking here
