Jon Moxley Discusses How He Plans To Prolong His Wrestling Career
Jon Moxley hopes to wrestle until he’s 50, but he knows he’ll need to slow down.
The AEW World Champion has been active in wrestling since 2004 and before he joined WWE, put years on his body in various deathmatches on the Independent scene. Now that he’s older, he’s become wiser in how much his body can and can’t take on a daily basis.
Appearing on the debut episode of Oral Sessions with his wife Renee Paquette, Moxley was asked how he plans on prolonging his wrestling career.
“A lot of times you have to work smarter, not harder. Doing things in training to try and increase mobility. I don’t have a problem taking a full rest day. I’m kind of a training addict where, even on a day off, I still end up running five miles for some reason because I feel like I have to work. I’m going to be 35 and there’s a lot of miles for 35. The career I had before this, a lot of deathmatches and stupid stuff I did to my body and regular wrestling and training, and all the time in WWE. Years of going through multiple tables every night and driving a bazillion miles every night and every plane and tour. I didn’t miss a day of work for years. I took one TV off in six years. If I kept on doing that at the same pace, I wouldn’t have lasted long. I could feel my physical window, not that it’s closing, I can feel the distance now. I want to keep it open and extend it and keep wrestling as long as I possibly can. I’d like to be 50 and wrestle. When we have kids, I’d like them to see me wrestle. Over the next year or two, I’ll see where I’m at physically and make a decision. The pandemic really changed the year and made it less busy, but I’ve been having super physical matches and getting to Jacksonville from Vegas and back is a bitch,” he said.
Moxley mentioned that he worked through a torn triceps in WWE, which put a damper on his honeymoon as they weren’t sure what was wrong with him at the time. He continues to work a hard-hitting style in AEW, but only wrestles a couple of times a month on television as opposed to multiple times a week.
On the latest episode of AEW Dynamite, Moxley revealed that he and Renee are expecting their first child together, casually making the announcement during a promo against Kenny Omega.
The AEW World Title will be on the line next Wednesday on Dynamite when Moxley defends against Omega.
