John Cena says he would be a part of the celebration if Charlotte Flair broke the world title record.
Ric Flair previously set the record for world title reigns with 16. Cena tied Flair’s record at WWE Royal Rumble 2017, and he hasn’t passed it since. As a result, the two former champions share the record. Ric’s daughter, Charlotte Flair, is currently a 14-time champion; she is a six-time Raw Women’s Champion, a seven-time SmackDown Women’s Champion, and a former Divas Champion. Charlotte is also a two-time NXT Women’s Champion.
Clearly, Charlotte is well within reach of the mark her father set. Ric previously stated that he believes a segment where he and Cena congratulate Charlotte on breaking the record would draw over two million viewers on TV.
Speaking with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz as part of 92NY Recanati-Kaplan Talks, Cena brought up Ric Flair’s comments and noted that he told the WWE Hall of Famer he would be there if Charlotte broke the record.
“I do like the legacy that Charlotte is creating for herself. I know Ric Flair had something about if she were to win a seventeenth championship, we should be there both to shake her hand. I got to see Ric recently and tell him that, if that happens, we will both be there because I think that’s tremendous. I’m not short-changing anybody else, but just because I know and love Ric, and I admire what Charlotte has done. That’s my connection to that moment, so that’s why I gotta say he,” Cena said.
Charlotte Flair last wrestled at WWE WrestleMania 39, where she lost the SmackDown Women’s Championship to Rhea Ripley. She has stated that she is taking a few weeks away from WWE. More information is available here.
In the same interview, Cena recalled how the Firely Funhouse match was his brainchild. Check out his comments here.
