Joe Hendry Discusses The Difference Between Pro And Amateur Wrestling
"The Prestigious One" is going to be representing his homeland in Australia.
Scottish pro-wrestler, Joe Hendry, will be making his second transition from the squared circle to the amateur wrestling mat. Hendry will be representing Scotland at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, which will begin April 4th and will commence on April 15th in Australia. A former ICW Tag-Team Champion in his own right, the Scotsman has made a name for himself by having "extravagant" entrances; mostly mocking or making a parody out of other wrestlers entrances. While speaking with the Scottish Sun, he stated that if allowed to make his own entrance at the Commonwealth Games, then it will for sure be unique.
“If the Commonwealth Games were to allow me to make an entrance I’d be all over that and I am going to make inquiries into whether or not I can supply my own music. If I can, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out there will be some magic taking place. I would never give it away, but it would have to be the best entrance ever," he would continue. "I’ve already done some crazy stuff. I did the Miley Cyrus song Wrecking Ball, called it Hendry Ball and rolled to the ring in a zorb."
Hendry is well versed in both amateur and pro wrestling. In 2017, he won British Senior Championship gold in freestyle wrestling. He would go on to share his thoughts on the difference between the two forms of the sport and revealed which one he feels has the roughest grind.
“When it comes to wear and tear, pro wrestling is absolutely the tougher of the two, it’s a grind. Many sports have specific events spaced out that you can train for months for, but with pro wrestling, it’s match after match every night. Amateur wrestling is very different and it’s a completely different thrill on the mat. It’s the most intense feeling possible competing against other immense athletes and you find out the most about yourself by doing that. But to me, professional wrestling is the greatest entertainment in the world. I can’t think of another art form that lets you express yourself in as many ways." Hendry would add, "You are on display all the time from walking to the ring to the things you say and the moves you do, so I have huge respect for athletes from both endeavors.”
Hendry has also made an appearance on WWE programming, as he was a part of Rusev and Lana's United States Championship conquest segment in 2014.
As noted, Hendry will be competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia and to read more of his thoughts on representing Scotland and what the future holds for him, click here.
