Jake Roberts Initially Had Ten-Week Contract With AEW, Didn’t Know Lance Archer At First

On March 4, 2020, Jake Roberts made a surprise appearance on AEW Dynamite, confronting Cody Rhodes and promising a new client.

One week later, Lance Archer made his AEW debut as Jake’s client. Since then, the two men have been tied at the hip with Roberts guiding Archer’s career in the company.

Speaking to Brandon Walker of Rasslin’ Roberts discussed his hesitation in joining AEW, but how it all worked out for the best.

“After you’ve lived through McMahon, it leaves you sour. He destroyed a lot of people. That’s his problem. It soured me on promotions, the big ones, because I knew what they could do to humans. They were able to steal your dreams. I see this as an opportunity to regain and recover my dream, which was do what I could in wrestling. They opened the door just a little and I came to AEW with a contract that said ten-weeks, then I was going to be done. Very quickly, they decided they wanted to keep me around,” he said.

Jake went on to say that no matter the opportunities thrown at him outside of wrestling, he would continue to be with AEW. If Tony Khan said they needed to save some money, Jake would just show up to events, calling AEW his home.

On the subject of Archer and the pairing between the two, Roberts said, “I did not know Lance Archer and had never seen him wrestle, but when they offered me the opportunity, I jumped on it. I was just going to do what I do and let them do what they do. I can’t be the guy in the ring, but he does a great job and makes it easy for me.”

Though he has yet to hold a major title, Archer has found plenty of success in AEW. He sports an 18-5 overall record in the company.

Archer recently competed in the Face of the Revolution ladder match at AEW Revolution. Scorpio Sky walked away with the brass ring in the bout. If you missed anything from AEW Revolution, check out Fightful’s full report on the show by clicking here.
