Goldberg Says His Legacy Has Been Tarnished ‘A Little Bit’; Continues On To ‘Open Doors’ For His Son
Goldberg has one more match left on his WWE contract, but he’s open to more.
Bill Goldberg since 2016 has been back in WWE a handful of times but has continued to power through under a part-time schedule. This most recent WWE tenure has seen him capture the WWE Universal Championship on two separate occasions and compete in Saudi Arabia against names such as The Undertaker and Bobby Lashley.
Goldberg has one more match left on his contract and in a new interview with Sports Illustrated, Goldberg revealed that he is open to doing more with WWE if they want him to do so after his current contract is complete but he understands that his legacy has been tarnished to a degree and that he risks further damage to his legacy every time he goes in the ring.
“I have cemented a legacy,” Goldberg says. “It’s been tarnished a little bit. There is a huge risk every time I come back, and that’s a challenge I’ve taken on. But looking at the whole, I am honored and privileged to be Goldberg in the WCW days, and I am still honored to be doing it today.
“I’m the last one that should pass judgment on his career. I try not to look back too often. I’m not a fatalist, but I don’t like the end of anything. If looking back brings me closer to the end, I’d rather wait until it’s over.”
For Goldberg, his son is everything, that is why he came back to wrestling. He wanted his son to see him wrestle. Now, he continues to wrestle, to continue to open doors for his son, Gage.
“As a power wrestler, it’s tough,” Goldberg says. “It’s not easy to do this at my age. But I knew that, and I said the hell with it. For me, the prize is worth it, and that’s to open up opportunities for my son. If I can continue to do what I’m doing and continue to provide opportunities for him, then I’ll consider this a success.”
As for whether or not he will continue with WWE beyond his contract, Goldberg says he’s currently focused on the present.
“I’m focused on what’s next,” Goldberg says. “If they want to come back to me with something, we’ll talk. You never know what the future holds.”
Goldberg recently commented on one of his latter-stage matchups, namely the match he had at Super Showdown 2019 against The Undertaker. Read more here.
