Gary Vee: Outside Of Walt Disney, Vince McMahon Is One Of Society’s Most Significant Storytellers

Gary Vaynerchuk reflects on what professional wrestling means to him.

In 2022, it is very easy to come across any content created by Gary Vaynerchuk aka GaryVee. From social media to NFTs, Gary tries to remain at the forefront of all major breakthroughs on the internet and he is talking about the influence professional wrestling has had on him and his promotion style.

Speaking on Casual Conversations with The Wrestling Classic, Gary spoke about the influence that professional wrestling promos from the likes of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage have had on him and the realization he had that his videos have the cadence of wrestling promos.

“Basically, Gary Vee, the communicator, is a mix between Randy ‘The Macho Man’ Savage promo, and Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy. I mean, the amount of Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, I listened to in combination [with] wrestling promos. Yeah, I mean, sometimes, it’s actually too ridiculous.”

He continued, “I cut a video, six or seven years ago, for a conference I was keynoting. My team came in like, ‘Gary, ticket sales aren’t going that strong. Would you do a quick video to tell everybody about this social media conference?’ Literally, this is what came out of my mouth. I’m like, ‘Hey, guys, it’s Gary Vee. Civic Center March 19 —’. I stopped like, ‘Oh my god. This is literally a fucking wrestling promo.’”

Gary also says that wrestlers have reached out to him letting him know that what he’s doing is basically cutting promos.

“It’s funny. A couple of wrestlers. hit me up on DM , who are fans, like, ‘Dude, you cut promos.’ I’m like, ‘I do. I know.’ It took me — I didn’t know it for five or six years of Gary Vee shit. But then when somebody pointed it out, and I really started getting into my feelings on it, I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ I think a lot of my content now is clips from my day-to-day life. So it’s a little bit less. But my rants, which were a big part of my 2014-2016 content, and I just did one the other day, I feel that they’re like, flat out WrestleMania promo videos.”

When asked why wrestling means a lot to him, Gary, influenced by entrepreneurs of the past, stated that aside from Walt Disney himself, Vince McMahon is one of the most significant storytellers of characters in modern society.

“Outside of Walt Disney, I think Vince McMahon has been one of the most significant storytellers of characters in our society. I think VeeFriends being one of the most important things in my life over the next 50 years, it’s going to make sense as to why I always was associating [it] to Transformers, wrestling, GI Joe, Disney. I’m a storytelling, character-based human being, and I think wrestling is unique because, unlike wrestling, everything else is fictional. [These are] real humans that play these characters, but it’s storytelling. I think it’s been the most significant storytelling machine in our society, and that I admire.”

VeeFriends is Gary Vee’s NFT collection. WWE has tried to get into the world of NFTs also. Specifically, the NFT drop based around John Cena in the summer of 2021 was called, by John Cena himself, an absolute failure. Learn more here.
