Exclusive: Drago Talks Differences Wrestling For Lucha Underground And Impact
Like several other Lucha Underground stars such as Johnny Impact, Pentagon Jr., Brian Cage and Fenix, Drago is one of many wrestlers from the El Rey Network show to make the jump to Impact Wrestling.
Drago, the former Lucha Underground Trios champion, spoke to Fightful on what are the differences between wrestling for both companies. Drago stated that while there aren’t a lot of things different between the two promotions, he did note that there are different approaches to each company’s wrestling philosophy.
The long-time veteran noted that Lucha Underground allows for more freedom in matches, which forces the wrestlers to adapt to anything that happens within the show’s chaotic matches.
“There’s not a lot that’s different. I haven’t really noticed anything different from either company that would make my job harder to do inside the ring. The styles are similar. Maybe in Lucha Underground, it’s more independent. There’s really little that holds us back in the ring and that kind of forces us to learn to adapt on the fly to anything that happens in a match and with any style. In the times that I’ve wrestled on Impact, it wasn’t hard to really adapt to my opponent’s style. I think I have managed well and I can adapt well and I’ve learned that throughout my time in Lucha Underground. Taking in what I learned from people at Lucha Underground, I’ve been able to apply that when I go to Europe, Asia, Australia and I’ve been able to mesh well with the American style, the Latino-American style… Lucha Underground was a way for people to watch a more distinct style and appreciate wrestling as a television show where people fought past their limits, there was a lot of violence,” Drago said.
As for Impact, Drago said there is more order as to how matches are presented, but that he is able to work matches just as well despite there being limits compared to Lucha Underground’s usual hardcore style of matches.
“Impact is a company that comes to respect what was done in the past and looks to make the wrestling a little more Americanized. Maybe my commentary is off, but that’s what I see. There’s rules [in Impact], there’s a limit to how things are done and so it is a bit more balanced,” Drago said.
Even though the status of the next season of Lucha Underground is unclear, Drago will be representing Lucha Underground alongside, Daga, Aerostar and King Cuerno, taking on the four-man group of Moose, Eddie Edwards and Brian Cage representing Impact Wrestling. The multi-man tag match is set to take place at “United We Stand” which will take place in Rahway, New Jersey on April 4.
